The way prepared

A winding footpath leads through dry hills and reeds toward the Jordan beneath a wide sky.
The Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begins. The prophets tell of a messenger sent ahead and a wilderness voice calling people to prepare the Lord’s way and make his paths straight.

A voice at the Jordan

John the Baptist stands in the Jordan beside an adult being baptized, while a line of people waits on the bank.
John preached a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. People from all Judea and Jerusalem came to the Jordan, confessing their sins as he baptized them. He wore camel’s hair and a leather belt; his food was locusts and wild honey.

Someone greater is coming

John addresses people at the riverbank, his open hand raised above his rough camel-hair garment.
John proclaimed that someone mightier was coming; John was unworthy even to loosen his sandal strap.
John the Baptist: I baptized you in water, but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.

You are my beloved Son

Jesus rises from the Jordan beside John. Above him, the heavens part and a dove-like form descends.
Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John. Rising from the water, he saw heaven part and the Spirit descend on him like a dove.
Voice from heaven: You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Forty days in the wilderness

Jesus stands alone among pale wilderness rocks and sparse scrub, with a small wild animal far away.
The Spirit immediately drove Jesus into the wilderness. For forty days Satan tempted him there. He was with the wild animals, and angels served him.

The kingdom is at hand

Jesus addresses a small gathering beside a path and modest Galilean homes.
After John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the Good News of God’s Kingdom.
Jesus: The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.

Come after me

Simon and Andrew leave their fishing net on the shore and turn toward Jesus.
By the Sea of Galilee, Simon and his brother Andrew were casting a fishing net. Jesus called them. They immediately left their nets and followed him.
Jesus: Come after me, and I will make you into fishers for men.

Leaving the boat

James and John step from a fishing boat toward the shore. Zebedee remains aboard with hired servants and the nets.
Farther along, Jesus saw James and John, sons of Zebedee, mending nets in a boat. He called them at once. They followed him, leaving their father in the boat with the hired servants.

Teaching with authority

Jesus teaches an attentive assembly in a modest Capernaum synagogue.
In Capernaum, Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and taught. His hearers were astonished: he taught with authority, unlike the scribes.

Be quiet, and come out

Jesus addresses a distressed man in the synagogue while nearby people give them space.
A man with an unclean spirit cried out, asking whether Jesus the Nazarene had come to destroy them and naming him the Holy One of God.
Jesus: Be quiet, and come out of him!
The spirit convulsed the man, cried out loudly, and left him.

Even the spirits obey

The man from the preceding scene stands calmly among astonished hearers near the synagogue doorway.
Everyone was amazed. What was this new teaching? He commanded even unclean spirits with authority, and they obeyed. News of Jesus spread immediately throughout Galilee and the surrounding region.

He took her hand

Jesus takes Simon’s mother-in-law by the hand as she begins to rise from a sleeping mat; Simon watches nearby.
Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John to Simon and Andrew’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law lay feverish. Told about her, Jesus took her hand and raised her. The fever left immediately, and she served them.

At the door after sunset

People gather at the house’s doorway after sunset as Jesus compassionately attends one person.
After sunset, the city gathered at the door, bringing the sick and those possessed by demons. Jesus healed many with various diseases and cast out many demons. He would not let the demons speak, because they knew him.

Before daylight

Simon and his companions find Jesus at a quiet rocky place while it is still dark.
While it was still dark, Jesus went to a deserted place and prayed. Simon and his companions searched for him and found him.
Simon and his companions: Everyone is looking for you.

Into the next towns

Jesus gestures along a path toward nearby settlements as Simon and the companions prepare to go.
Jesus: Let’s go elsewhere into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because I came out for this reason.
Through Galilee he preached in their synagogues and cast out demons.

I want to. Be made clean.

Jesus reaches out to touch a kneeling man beside a quiet path, meeting his hopeful gaze.
A man with leprosy knelt before Jesus.
The man: If you want to, you can make me clean.
Jesus: I want to. Be made clean.
Moved with compassion, Jesus touched him. Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was clean.

A testimony to them

The same man stands listening while Jesus gives him a serious instruction.
Jesus strictly warned the man and sent him away.
Jesus: See that you say nothing to anybody, but go show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.

They came from everywhere

Groups of people approach Jesus along converging paths in open country outside a distant settlement.
But the man spread the news widely. Jesus could no longer enter a city openly, so he stayed outside in deserted places. People came to him from everywhere.
