01

No room at the door

Jesus teaches a crowd that fills a modest house and gathers around its doorway.
After some days Jesus returned to Capernaum. News spread that he was at home, and so many gathered that there was no room, even around the door. He spoke the word to them.

Through the roof

Four people lower one man on a flexible mat through an opening in the roof toward Jesus inside the crowded room.
Four people carried a paralyzed man to Jesus. Blocked by the crowd, they broke open the roof above him and lowered the mat on which the man lay.

Your sins are forgiven

Jesus speaks gently to the man reclining on the mat while people listen nearby.
Seeing their faith, Jesus spoke to the man on the mat.
Jesus: Son, your sins are forgiven you.

Reasoning in their hearts

Seated scribes look thoughtful in the crowded room; the man’s mat is visible in the foreground.
Some scribes sat there, reasoning silently in their hearts:
Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?

Authority on earth

Jesus addresses the listeners and turns toward the man still lying on his mat.
Jesus immediately perceived their inward reasoning and asked why they reasoned this way. Which was easier: declaring sins forgiven, or telling the man to rise, carry his bed, and walk?
Jesus: But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins

Take up your mat

The man walks out through the crowd carrying his mat while Jesus and the amazed listeners watch.
Jesus: I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house.
He rose, immediately took up his mat, and went out before them all. Amazed, they glorified God.
The people: We never saw anything like this!

Follow me

Levi begins to rise from his seat at the tax office as Jesus calls him beside the Galilean shore.
Again beside the sea, Jesus taught the multitude. Passing the tax office, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus seated there and called him. Levi rose and followed.
Jesus: Follow me.

At the table

Jesus reclines at a meal among disciples and other guests while people nearby ask a question.
Jesus reclined with his disciples and many tax collectors and sinners who followed him. Scribes and Pharisees asked his disciples why he ate and drank with them.
Jesus: Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

While the bridegroom is here

Jesus listens and responds to a small group of questioners beside a quiet path.
John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. They asked why Jesus’s disciples did not fast.
Jesus: Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them?
While the bridegroom is with them, they cannot fast. When he is taken away, then they will fast.

A worse tear

Jesus: No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made.

Jesus and his disciples pass through grain fields as one disciple plucks ears of grain and questioners address him.
On the Sabbath, Jesus passed through grain fields. As they went, his disciples began plucking the ears of grain.
The Pharisees: Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?

Have you never read?

Jesus explains David’s example to the listeners beside the grain field.
Jesus asked whether they had read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need: at the time of Abiathar the high priest, he entered God’s house, ate the show bread reserved for priests, and shared it with his companions.

Lord even of the Sabbath

Jesus finishes his answer while disciples and other listeners stand beside the grain field.
Jesus: The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Jesus: Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.
